From the Record Book of Aspen Darktower: Autumn’s Splendor

It has been a while since I have posted from Aspen’s diary. Today seemed like a great day to find an entry that fits. As some of you know, I have spent the last couple of months moving from one state to another. Here in my new home, the mountains above me are changing color and the canyon I drive through to work each day is showing signs that fall is here. It’s my favorite season. Not my nose’s favorite season, but I still love it. Happy Fall!

“Little Harbour is a pretty little place when I can step back and appreciate it for what it really is. This was freedom for a handful of people before my father was even born. It’s this small, heavily treed area next to the sea, set back in a slight cove of sorts.
This was where my father fell deeply in love with my mama, where the visions of his future with her took root. I sit here beneath a sweet smelling tree and close my eyes to the pain and frustration of being here and I try to imagine a time when my father smiled and spoke words of adoration to his Lyndsay. I try to hear the sound of her laughter and I wonder if she was as docile as a young woman as she was when I left her side. I like to think she had some sass to her, a mind all her own.
And now, I shed my cloak of duty and see this place through child-like eyes where I can appreciate the unique colors of the leaves surrounding me: the gold and yellow hues, the reds, browns, and oranges that have dropped over all the leaves on the trees, as if the sprites had been hard at work painting a masterpiece for the world.
Here, beside the sea, there are few days of sunshine. But to feel that occasional beam on my face makes me smile and to breathe in that crisp, sweet air that blends with the brine of the sea, fills my body with comfort and hope before I puff it out in a cloud of smoke from my mouth.
The Autumn Splendor shows me that there is always hope. That all things are temporary. Everything changes constantly. I need to take comfort in that knowledge. It isn’t always easy, but it is beautiful.”

I have a handful of short stories that tell the tale of Aspen’s mother and father, long before she was born. I call these short readings “The Tales of Elgolan”. They are short supplemental readings that expand on a certain story from The Aspen Series. Right now, the first story in the “Tales” stories is available to you at no charge when you join my Lords and Ladies Club. This first installment is called “The Serpent Strikes” and is not available anywhere else, unless you buy the book from my publisher.

I published the next story on Amazon last month, “The Devil’s Lair”. And today, “Brimstone’s Ashes” went live! There are two more installments about Vatric and Lyndsay to go! They will go live on the first of the next two months! All of the “Tales” stories, except #1 are only .99! This isn’t because they are crappy stories, it’s because they are shorter reads than a full novel. So pour a cup of tea and get lost in the dramatic “Tales of Elgolan” stories!

And on a side note, if you have not yet read Noble Courage, the first of the Aspen Series, you have a couple of options: A. Download from Smashwords for FREE or B. Download from Amazon for .99 (they refuse to match the free price for me, but they might for you). Either way, you get a full novel to read, to love, and to enjoy. I decided to price it lower because it was the first in the series and I love my readers. It’s a great adventure, in my own biased opinion, and I want EVERYONE to feel like they can enjoy it. So how can you give me some love? Read the books, leave me your thoughts, and be a part of my club. Members knew about the release of the “Tales” stories weeks before anyone else. I love to stay in touch with my biggest fans! And the greatest compliment to my work would be to share it with someone you know. Thanks for the love!

The Earl of Cliffehaven: Thorne Darktower- Character Interview

IMG_2958

I hope you are enjoying day one of Aspen’s Birthday Bash!

My characters are some of my best friends. If that makes me weird, then I’m weird. It’s nothing I didn’t already know and I’m okay with that! I love that J.K. Rowling has the ability to provide back stories and histories on her characters. She is always coming out with little stories to supplement her series and I just love that. I guess that if I like it, other people do also! Because my characters have so much depth and history, I decided to interview the main ones. I love how they all speak to me and their story comes across in their own style.

So here’s a little treat for you… I posted this interview of Thorne a long time ago but it’s the perfect time to revisit and get to know him better!

And don’t forget, the elusive interview with Cappy will happen sometime throughout the tour! Stay tuned!

Please visit my good friend, Lady Jeriann Watkins tomorrow for a post on Price of Power: Book Two of the Aspen Series!

Virtual Birthday Bash: 1st Stop!

I love Aspen. Sure, she is very much like me in many ways so I will claim her good qualities, thank you. Lol. I can’t tell you why this year feels different to celebrate her, but it does. Perhaps it stems from learning to love myself more that has caused me to feel so nostalgic. Maybe I’m in awe of her as I work on book 6. I really can’t say for sure.

Hopefully some of you are new readers. But regardless of how involved you are with my Aspen Series, this post should be a lot of fun! I will be introducing you to the cast in this post and welcome your thoughts and comments! Let’s get ready for some reading! It’s the cheapest, most adventurous vacation you will take this summer!

Now, I have written this series as I watched it play like a movie in my mind. Therefore, it’s natural for me to cast it like a movie as well. Keep in mind, I did not pen the characters based on these celebrities, I fit them to the character’s roles.

Meet Aspen!

Aspen

This girl, born to a poor family but possessing a certain grace, endures every obstacle that tries to stand in her way. Nothing holds her back from her moral obligations to always do the right thing. Sometimes this poses a challenge for her, but there are times it works in her favor too. She is sweet and loveable with a temper that would rival an angry volcano in her fury.

Meet Thorne!

Ah, Thorne. Many refer to him as the perfect man who has a chip on his shoulder. He is one with a haunted past who doesn’t know he is looking for a ray of sunshine to disrupt the storm he calls life. He has no idea how one decision early in his life would shape his entire future…

Meet Rayven!

Such a beautiful boy to fall in love with! Aspen’s heart first pitter-patters for this noble young man. She vows to marry him one day but one should be most careful about what they wish for…

Rayven St. Michael doesn’t disappoint and keeps you guessing and on your guard!

Meet Rothan!

There is something to be said about a king who acts the spoiled child. Power knows how to control this pathetic man. He may shock you at times, but never underestimate him for he will be the first one to stab you sharply between the shoulder blades!

Meet Cappy!

Cappy is a fierce leader of Thorne’s military but he also has a soft underbelly that looks upon Thorne like a son. He is jolly and loving, but attacks quickly with his large axe. Cappy is a favorite in Noble Courage. You don’t meet people like him every day.

Meet Vatric!

Until you really get to know him, Vatric seems like a monster. This is the father of sweet Aspen and there is no love lost between them. Vatric is a fine example of how evil can shape a man’s mind. Poor, poor Vatric. Life has been pretty hard on this guy.

You can get the first installment of Vatric’s story when you join the Lords and Ladies Club!

Meet Lyndsay!

And there is Lyndsay. We just celebrated her birthday a couple of weeks ago. Here is a woman who lived a hard life, loved deeply, and became a victim of her own grief. She mothered Aspen but found it difficult to protect her and ultimately finds herself living amongst a sea of regrets.

You can find more of the cast on my Pinterest board!

The Aspen Series was written to be real, but also to be empowering. The message? It doesn’t matter where you come from but how you embrace life. It’s important to be who you really are even in the face of criticism. That’s very hard to do sometimes. This message is not passed on much in our very negative society. Girls grow up feeling fat and ugly, depression runs rampant and suicide is a common solution these days. I was one of those girls and it has taken me my entire adult life to find my self-worth. It is during those young years that dreams should be encouraged and body image should be reinforced. Aspen shows us that all people have value and even when you are born a pauper, you hold the power to better the lives of those around you and become a leader admired by many. Never allow anyone to hold you back. Never allow anyone to make you feel like quitting. You are an amazing gift and you have a purpose.

Feel free to check out the trailer for Noble Courage HERE! Then, head on over to Amazon to download your copy! No Kindle? That’s okay! Grab the FREE Kindle app! Amazon has the sign up right under the cover of Noble Courage on the Kindle Store.

Tomorrow’s post will be hosted by my good friend, Jeriann. Don’t forget to pay her a visit! And each afternoon, I will be posting interviews with my main characters with a bonus interview with Cappy coming up soon!

Thank you so much for reading and celebrating Aspen along with me throughout her birthday week!

Happy Birthday, Lyndsay Tiller!

I’ve been going on about all this birthday business for a couple of weeks. I wanted you to grow to love Lyndsay Tiller as much as I do. Because she is a fictional character, I can’t give her a gift so I will give one to all of you instead!

As promised, Noble Courage is #free today in honor of my heroine’s mother. I hope you are all in a reading kind of mood because the rest of the series is only .99 a copy! Now’s the time to grab your copies!

I have contemplated a passage that introduces you to this woman of strength and sacrifice. Here’s the one I chose from Noble Courage:

[Lyndsay] was collecting the laundry when she spied her daughter running, soaked to the bone. A sigh escaped her and she hefted the tub into the house where she deftly found a blanket and set it to warm by the fire. She turned when she heard the door open, hands on her hips, lips pursed, and beheld Aspen shaking like the day she was born. Her daughter’s lips were blue and she clutched a ball of fabric to her chest as if it was keeping her warm. A smile touched Lyndsay’s lips and she could not hold back the bubble of laughter that burst forth before she knew what came over her.

“I don’t know what happened to ya, but ya look a sight, girl!” she laughed.

“I f-fell in the s-stream on a-accident. I am s-sorry,” she managed between clacking teeth.

“Well, better get ya out of that dress ‘fore ya catch yer death. Come on, strip!”

Aspen did as she was bid and sat her gift on the table near the fire, letting the laces of her dress fall from her slim frame to the rushes on the floor. Her mother wrapped her in the warm blanket and had her sit for a cup of hot tea.

After I had written Noble Courage, I had a lot of questions concerning Vatric and Lyndsay. They wanted to hear their “story” and to figure out why they were the way they were. So in response to their questions, I wrote the first five stories of Tales of Elgolan. These stories were just extra reading to gain more insight on these characters. I love the days of Vatric and Lyndsay’s courtship. They have a sweet history that is sprinkled with heartache, as that period in time was harsh and unforgiving. It’s the glimmers of love that bring hope to people.

Love one another, forgive unconditionally, and live peacefully.

If you love the books, please feel free to leave me your thoughts on Amazon! It’s like giving me a giant hug! 🙂

Trivia Time! We’re Having a Party!!

It’s been a little while since I’ve divulged any cool trivia about my writing. I thought this little ditty fit great!

My mom’s birthday, as you know from last week’s post, is coming up on the 31st of May. Yes, my books will be on sale that day. But something you may not know is that Lyndsay’s birthday shares that of my mother.

See, when I created Lyndsay, I patterned her after my mom. She was sweet and strong but beaten down by life, illness and loved ones that couldn’t understand how she felt inside.

There was a time when my mom was my best friend. She helped me through every pregnancy, every birth, and every adjustment to life with children. And as I sit back and think about it, a rift between us began to form when she moved away. I mean like across the state kind of moving. We could talk on the phone, but it wasn’t the same. I learned to live life without her.

I suppose there was some jealousy in me that she found a guy that treated her well and that she was head over heels with this sweetheart of hers. I was a single mother of four sons dating one loser after another. I worked late hours and saw little of my children. I grew lonesome and regrets shredded my soul. My mom was not there to pick up the pieces and show me how to repair my life.

My mom, bless her, started to struggle. So much, that I grew agitated that I couldn’t help her. After years of coaxing, we finally moved her back nearby. Just as Aspen felt she had saved her mother, so did I. I had a lot of anger inside at those who had hurt her so badly and left her damaged.

The moral of this story? Even though I wrote Noble Courage a long time before most of this happened, my mom’s journey has been eerily similar to Lyndsay’s. I created a mother for Aspen inspired by the mother I love so much. One who is strong but submissive, loving yet hardened. Sometimes I look at her and those pretty blue eyes scream at me that she is so tired and worn out. Both mothers are people to celebrate as we approach May 31st!

If you read Noble Courage and want to hear more about Lyndsay’s life, read The Tales of Elgolan. It will only be available in one book for a short time longer! In this book, you are entertained by the back story to Aspen’s parents in five short stories, each connected with the next. Get it on Kindle today and get ready for the big sale on the rest of The Aspen Series on May 31st!!
